New Zealand sea-level rise (NZ SeaRise)

Description

The NZ SeaRise: Te Tai Pari O Aotearoa programme has released location specific sea-level rise projections out to the year 2300 for every 2 km of the coast of Aotearoa New Zealand. These projections can be accessed through an online tool developed by Takiwā, a data management and analytics platform.

Users are able to see how much and how fast sea level will rise along the coast. The tool allows users to click on a particular location on the coast and see how much sea level is expected to rise, and by when, under different climate change scenarios.

Methodology

Methods are described in the NIWA webpage: https://niwa.co.nz/natural-hazards/hazards/sea-levels-and-sea-level-rise

  • How are sea levels measured?
  • What is contributing to rising sea level?
  • Future sea-level rise projections
  • NZ SeaRise project and maps
  • Will the rise in sea level be a steady increase?
  • If sea-level rise is only 2–3 millimetres per year, then why worry?
