Description
Spatial estimates of stand carbon for radiata pine at three stockings (low 400 stems/ha; medium, 650; and high, 900) and at three ages for the medium stocking (ages 30, 40 and 50).
Stand carbon includes carbon in the aboveground biomass, belowground biomass, dead wood and litter pools. Soil carbon is not included.

Methodology
Predictions of carbon were made using a stand level model (Forest Carbon Predictor Version 5.1) which incorporates the 300 Index growth model and C_Change, a model that determines allocation of carbon to different biomass components. These predictions were then spatially scaled using air temperature and geospatial productivity surfaces (300 Index, Site Index).

Caveat(s) |
The presented surface is intended only as a guide for afforestation and growers should take into account the impact of microsite when choosing an appropriate species. These surfaces were derived from permanent sample plot data, which typically comprise plots of well managed trees, that do not have any unstocked areas and are sited away from exposed ridges. Consequently, we recommend that presented values of carbon are reduced by 15% when applied to standard forestry sites. Note that in the past, target final crop stocking for both clearwood and structural regimes has been lower than the low and medium stocking rates in this dataset, and mortiality may be under-represented in higher stockings over longer rotations. |
